Women Partners In OB/GYN San Antonio - Osteoporosis

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is an enhanced X-ray image of the skeleton that provides an accurate measurement of bone density. Bone density tests are used to determine whether patients have osteoporosis, a condition in which bones are weakened and may fracture easily.

During the procedure, a beam of low-dose X-rays is targeted at an area, usually the lower spine and hips. The energy is measured as it is absorbed by soft tissue and by bone, and computer software then processes the gathered information. Patients will be given an order to have the test performed at a facility of their choice. Exams are not performed in the office.

How to prevent bone loss for post-menopausal women:
  • Calcium – 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams per day through diet (3-5 servings of milk products per day) or calcium supplements
  • Vitamin D – 400 to 800 IU per day = 1-2 multivitamins per day
Exercise – 3-5 days per week; must be weight bearing:
  • Walking
  • Aerobics
  • Weight Training
  • Tennis
  • Golf
Fall Prevention – look for hazards in your home such as:
  • Loose rugs
  • Extension cords
  • Steps
  • Poor lighting
